WHY COMMIT TO GENDER EQUITY?
As the CEO of Breast Cancer Care WA, I am proud to announce my decision to join CEOs for Gender Equity. This commitment directly aligns with our mission to support those affected by breast cancer, the majority of whom are women. However, my commitment to gender equity extends beyond healthcare, it is a fundamental issue that impacts workplaces, communities and the broader economy. By advocating for gender equity in all sectors, we can help foster a more inclusive and equitable society for everyone.
Gender equity is not just a social responsibility; it is an essential leadership imperative. At Breast Cancer Care WA, we see firsthand how gender disparities impact health outcomes, financial security and access to essential support services. By joining CEOs for Gender Equity, I am committed to contributing to a collective effort that drives meaningful change across industries.
This initiative offers a valuable opportunity to collaborate with like-minded leaders who understand that gender equity benefits everyone. It serves as a platform for learning, sharing best practices and holding ourselves accountable for fostering fair and inclusive workplaces. As CEOs, we have the influence and responsibility to set the standard for equity in leadership, decision-making and workplace culture.
As leaders, we shape the policies, culture and strategic direction of our organisations. Supporting gender equity is not just about fairness – it is essential for unlocking the full potential of our workforce and ensuring that diverse perspectives drive innovation and success.
Research consistently highlights that organisations with diverse leadership teams not only perform better financially but also build stronger workplace cultures and demonstrate greater resilience in times of change.
My first step in advancing gender equity within Breast Cancer Care WA has been to assess where we stand today. This involves reviewing our policies, leadership representation and workplace culture to identify areas where we can make meaningful improvement.
One immediate priority is embedding equity into our recruitment and leadership development strategies. This involves creating clear pathways for women to step into leadership roles, offering mentorship opportunities and ensuring equitable pay and career progression for all.
I am dedicated to creating a workplace where every employee feels valued and heard. This includes evaluating our flexibility policies, parental leave support and workplace culture to ensure they promote inclusivity and work-life balance for all.
A significant milestone in our gender equity journey has been the recent onboarding of three new female board members. Their diverse experiences, skills and perspectives will greatly enrich our leadership team, enabling us to make more informed and well-rounded decisions.
Celebrating the expertise these women bring is not just about representation – it highlights the value of diverse leadership in shaping the future of our organisation. Their contributions will play a crucial role in strengthening Breast Cancer Care WA’s impact, ensuring we continue to meet the evolving needs of our community with both empathy and innovation.
Looking ahead, I am committed to leveraging our platform to advocate for gender equity in healthcare. This includes supporting research and policy discussions focused on addressing gender disparities in medical care, funding and support services. As a CEO, I also recognise the power of collaboration, and I look forward to working with other leaders through CEOs for Gender Equity to drive systemic change.
Ultimately, gender equity is not just a goal – it is a continuous commitment. By taking intentional action, holding ourselves accountable and working together, we can create a future where opportunities, leadership and success are accessible to all.
I am excited for the journey ahead and look forward to contributing to a more equitable and inclusive society.
